Explain what it means to have a hosting account. In the world of websites, you have two things: domain name and your host. We can provide both for you. We will host all of your files on one of our servers so your site is served up at any time of day or night with fast speed. Do I have to get a domain name with your company? I already have one with someone else.
When you sign up for hosting, all you do is change the DNS of your existing domain name to our DNS and your domain will work. It doesn't matter where you got the domain, if you have control over it and can change the DNS, your site will work with us. However if you need to get a domain you can do that here:
When I went to the site where I registered my domain, I did not see
where I could change the DNS. Now what? If you registered it with a company
that did not give you any kind of control panel or means to change anything
(contact info, etc.) you have made a mistake. :( You can try to transfer
it to us if the Admin contact is an email add. that you can check.
DNS (Domain Name Servers)
What is DNS? The Domain Name System (DNS) is a distributed Internet directory
service. DNS also refers to Domain Name Servers. DNS is used mostly to
translate between domain names and IP addresses, and to control Internet
email delivery.
Why is DNS important? Simply put, each server at Surpass has specific
DNS assigned to it. In order for your domain to work and for it to point
to your account on the server, you must change the DNS entries on your
domain record to the DNS assigned to the server.
When I change the DNS entries, how long will it take for my domain name
to work? It should only take 24 hours. If it takes more than 72 hours
(and others can see your site yet you cannot), you need to contact your
Internet Service provider because for some reason their DNS is not updating.
Usually there are no delays, however.
How do I know what DNS to use when I edit my domain record? Your activation
email provides the DNS you'll need to set your domain name to. And remember,
it will take 24 to 48 hours to take effect.
Your Domain Name
Explain the term domain name. A domain is basically a mask for an IP address. No one wants a slew of numbers on their business card so that is why domains came about. If you do not properly change the DNS for your domain name, all you'll be left with is http://55.555.555.5/user Setting Up Your Website
Getting Started
Basically, what do I need to begin uploading?
The IP address of the server to use at the FTP address
Users Name
Password
What will always work ?
No matter what domain name you get or what you change your DNS to, you
can always login to your account with us using the IP address of the
server. Generally you will use your domain name/cpanel for instance:
http://guesswho.com/cpanel and that will ALWAYS take you to your cpanel.
Do I have to use the IP? You must use the IP until you change the DNS
on your domain record. When 24 hours passes and your domain works, you
can then upload using ftp.yourdomain.com
Do people sometimes just use the IP, all of the time
Some prefer to always connect to the IP in case their program has a problem
resolving to names. The IP is always going to work.
What programs can I use to upload?
http://gftp.seul.org (Linux)
http://www.ipswitch.com/ (Windows)
http://www.fetchsoftworks.com (Mac)
Other FTP programs- Leech, SmartFTP, CuteFTP
Do I have to use an FTP program
We would prefer that you do, as it is easy and efficient. Sometimes
using your browser to upload can be a buggy hassle (especially if you
use Internet Explorer). Personally, we recommend FileZilla available
at download.com
My domain works now, but some of the images on my site are broken. What's wrong?
Your pages are probably coded correctly but the images are in a different
folder. Make sure that if the page has
img src="photos/party/cake.jpg"
that you actually have the photos folder & party folder uploaded.
sometimes but not always if you enable the image protection in your cpanel
that will cause your images to be all red X . I you have enabled that
feature, disable it and view your site before you submit support tickets.
